Mavis, born on June 13th, 1991, is a nationally ranked equestrian.

She is a very accomplished show jumper who won the Silver Medal at the Australian Youth Olympic Festival (2009) on a borrowed horse named Jencoyeh. However, most of her brilliant performances have been astride her own equally talented 11 year old Belgian Warmblood mare, Winia Van’t Vennehof.

According to JustWorldInternational , “Mavis Spencer began riding with coaches Dick Carvin and Susie Schroer in 2000. Under their tutelage, Mavis has advanced from the three-foot equitation division to competing in the 2008 Adequan/ USEF National Junior Jumper Championship in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, where she won Team and Individual Silver medals and was honored with the William C. Steinkraus Style of Riding Award.”  She also recently participated in the Australian Youth Olympic Festival in Sydney, Australia.

MOMMY AND ME: ALFRE WOODARD AND MAVIS SPENCERActress Alfre Woodard and her daughter Mavis Spencer are featured in the May issue of Essence magazine. Here is an excerpt from the article:“Every mother wamavis spencer & alfre woodard2nts to see her child fly, but perhaps not as literally as Alfre Woodard, whose 18-year-old daughter, Mavis Spencer, is a champion equestrian. “Even when she was a little girl, I never got nervous when she’d do five-foot jumps, because it was a God thing,” says the Emmy Award-winning actress. “I feel like the Creator speaks when I’m watching her.”
This past January, Alfre coaxed Mavis into trading boots and jodhpurs for high heels and a Valentino gown to assume the role of 2010′s Miss Golden Globe. “I rarely put makeup on. Afterward I was like, It’s time to get back to reality!” Mavis says of embodying the statuette at the sixty-seventh annual telecast, adding with a shrug, “I was always an independent person.” It’s something that makes Mama proud. “Mavis is smart,” says Alfre, who’s up next in the TNT police drama “Delta Blues.” “She’s an alpha girl and she’s unapologetic about it.”Photos:Essence magazine, May 2010 issuemavis spencer2Mavis rides her Belgian Warmblood mare,
